Eligibility for Supplemental Security Income, or SSI, does not involve any housing assistance. The United States federal government primarily established theSSI program to provide extra income to those who lack the means to support themselves.

A person living in the U.S. who is aged, blind or disabled and who earns very little to no incomeis qualified for SSI benefits. SSI recipients receive a monthly paycheck from the government, which amounted to $1,082 for couples and$721 for individuals in 2014.

Although the SSI program is not a federal housing assistance program, SSI recipients are often eligible to receive housing assistancefrom other government programs. Some SSI recipientsreside in public housing facilities, while others may be given vouchers to avail of federal housing aid.
