What are quintuplets?

Quintuplets or "quints" are five siblings who were all carried by their mother during the same pregnancy. Quintuplets are the result of a dizygotic pregnancy. This type of multiple-birth pregnancy indicates that multiple fetuses were produced from at least two zygotes.

The first quintuplets known to survive infancy were the Dionne quintuplets, born in Ontario, Canada in 1934. While quintuplet pregnancies are rare, instances of multiple-birth pregnancies have increased due to profound progress in reproductive technology, including fertility drugs and in vitro fertilization (IVF). Advances in modern medicine have also contributed to a decreased infant mortality rate in multiple-birth pregnancies.
