The term "nonuplets" refers to a multiple birth of nine babies. According to the American Society of Reproductive Medicine, multiple births of three or more are rare, with less than 1 percent of women who use fertility medications, the most common cause of multiple births, becoming pregnant with triplets.
According to the BBC News service, an Australian women gave birth to nonuplets in 1971, all of whom died within a few days. Nonuplets born to a Malaysian women in 1999 died within six hours of their birth. As the ASRM details, multiple births come with increased risks, including preterm labor and birth, preeclampsia and long-term handicap for one of more children.
