What are racing helmets?

A racing helmet is a protective helmet worn by race car drivers to protect the head from impact and debris in the event of a car crash. As of 2014, most racing helmets are built using an inner shell of polystyrene and padding combined with a carbon fiber outer shell.

To pass international safety standards set by the FIA or the Snell Memorial Foundation, a racing helmet must stay secure on the head when worn. Racing helmets must also offer protection from fire for the ears of a race car driver. Racing car helmets became compulsory in Formula One racing during the 1950s.
