Do the racks in a GE oven need to be removed before the self-cleaning cycle?

GE Appliances recommends removing the stainless steel racks before beginning the self-cleaning cycle on one of its ovens. However, it is safe to leave self-cleaning racks in the oven. The owner's manual identifies the type of rack found in each model.
During cleaning, most aluminum and porcelain drip pans can remain in the oven. However, aluminum pans sometimes become discolored or bent, and racks can lose their shine in certain cases. Some GE ovens have removable panels, but these remain inside during cleaning. After the cycle is complete, self-cleaning racks are occasionally oily. Owners can remove the residue with a cloth.
