What does Rainsford do to escape from Zaroff in "The Most Dangerous Game"?

In Richard Cornell's 1924 story "The Most Dangerous Game," Rainsford escapes Zaroff by leaping from a cliff and into the sea. Disappointed by Rainsford's apparent suicide, Zaroff retires to his bedroom, where he finds Rainsford waiting for him.

Zaroff congratulates Rainsford for having won the game, but Rainsford refuses to back down. Zaroff accepts Rainsford's challenge and says that the loser of the fight will be food for the hounds, while the winner will get to sleep in Zaroff's "very excellent bed." Cornell does not describe the fight itself but instead abruptly ends the story with, "He had never slept in a better bed, Rainsford decided."
