Scholastic Books recommends a fourth-grade reading level for the book Charlotte's Web, by E.B. White. The interest level range is between third and sixth grade.
The Newberry Award winning book was first published in 1952 by Harper and Brothers. It tells of the friendship between Wilbur, a farm pig, and Charlotte, a spider. Charlotte convinces the farmer to not slaughter Wilbur by writing endearing messages with her webs. After the farmer is convinced of Wilbur's value as a show pig, Wilbur makes it his duty to protect the egg sacs that Charlotte has laid. Charlotte soon dies, and Wilbur continues to watch after her offspring for generations thereafter.
