What is a rear brake assembly?

A rear brake assembly is a number of components working together to provide braking for an individual wheel. A drum brake assembly includes a drum, a cylinder, shoes, linings, springs, ratchet adjuster and a backplate. A rear disc brake assembly includes a disc, a caliper, pistons, pads and a backplate.

Modern cars have hydraulic brakes at the front and rear. The front brakes are under the greatest load because most the weight of the vehicle shifts to the front when stopping. For this reason, many vehicles have simpler drum brakes at the rear and more efficient disc brakes at the front.
