Is there a recall on Toyota airbags?

Toyota models built between 2003 and 2005 had recalls on their airbags. They were a part of a massive recall that affected more than 6 million vehicles, due to a defect in the inflator.

Takata is the leading innovator of airbag designs in the world. Unfortunately, in the early 2000s, their inflator design had a major fault, where the component would break upon impact. When the inflator broke, pieces of shrapnel would penetrate through the airbags and enter into the cabin of the vehicle.

The recall reached several make and models, including Honda, Toyota and Subaru. Due to the large volume of required replacements, some repair shops could only remove the defective airbags until more arrived in stock.
