What is a reciprocal in math fractions?

A reciprocal can be defined as a mathematical function or expression that is related to another, such that their product is equal to one. A fraction's reciprocal is found by swapping the denominator and the numerator.

The only way to find the reciprocal of a mixed fraction is by first converting it into an improper fraction, then swapping the numerator with the denominator. The reciprocals of whole numbers are found by placing one over the number. For example, the reciprocal of five is 1/5. A fraction multiplied by its reciprocal is always equal to one. Reciprocals are used when dealing with inverse proportions, finding perpendicular lines and dividing fractions.
