The daily recommended vitamin D intake is 600 international units, or 15 micrograms, in men and women between the ages of 19 to 70, according to the National Institutes of Health. The recommended daily value for men and women above the age of 70 is 800 IU, or 20 micrograms.

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin essential for bone growth, bone strength, cell growth, immune function and inflammation control, according to the National Institutes of Health. While the vitamin is found in very few foods, it can be obtained from the sun's ultraviolet rays and is widely available as an over-the-counter supplement.
