The recovery time after ankle fusion surgery varies by patient, but it usually takes 6 to 12 weeks for a patient to be able to put weight on the operative leg, according to the American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society. The tibia and talus require time to fuse together.
Patients typically use crutches, walkers, wheelchairs or knee scooters during the recovery period, states the American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society. Stitches and staples are usually removed about 10 to 14 days after the surgery, and some patients may need to do gentle physical therapy after the stitches are removed. At the 10 to 12 week mark, the fusion is usually sturdy enough to allow the patient to put more pressure on the foot.
