What is the recovery time for open heart surgery?

Open heart surgery patients typically remain in the hospital for up to seven days for the initial recovery period, advises Healthline. Once the patient is released from the hospital, at-home recovery can take up to six weeks.
Once released from the hospital, patients should avoid certain activities, including lifting more than 10 pounds, pushing and pulling heavy objects, and standing in one place for more than 15 minutes until medically cleared to do so, advises WebMD. Patients should also avoid driving a car during that time, but riding in a vehicle as a passenger is acceptable. Climbing stairs and walking are also allowed, unless doctor's orders restrict the patient.
