What is the recovery time for a tummy tuck?

According to plastic surgeon Charles Gruenwald, MD, the initial recovery stage for a tummy tuck lasts 10 to 14 days, and full recovery takes six weeks or more. In the seven days following the surgery, any inserted drains and stitches should be removed, says Douglas S. Steinbrech, MD, FACS.

During the first two weeks after surgery, patients must limit physical activity, can't drive and may not be able to work. Dr. Gruenwald explains that tummy tuck patients should not perform strenuous physical activity for at least six weeks after the procedure. Some patients may take longer to regain full functioning. To ensure ample recovery time, WebMD recommends taking up to a month off from work.
