Paris lies at the center of the ÃŽle-de-France region. Paris is located in north-central France and is the capital of the country. It occupies a position centrally located in the agricultural region known as the Paris Basin. Paris is at the crossroads of water and land routes.

Paris is ringed with forests filled with beech and oak. The forests are called the lungs of Paris because they help purify the air in the industrialized region, states Encyclopedia Britannica. The boundaries of Paris spread outward to engulf the surrounding towns, which are known as bourgs. They are usually built around monasteries or churches and are often the site of a market. Paris is comprised of 20 municipal districts that each have their own mayor and town hall.
