A National Surface Water Survey conducted by the Environmental Protection Agency concluded that the Adirondacks and Catskill Mountains in New York state, the mid-Appalachian highlands along the East coast, the upper Midwest and the mountainous areas of the Western United States are the areas most affected by acid rain.
Little Echo Pond in Franklin, N.Y., is one of the most acidic lakes in the country, with a pH of 4.2. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, acid rain continues to affect streams, lakes and marshes long after it rains. This is the result of the acid rain making its way to large bodies of water after falling on buildings and roads and then making its way through the sewer system.
