What religion celebrates Kwanzaa?

Kwanzaa is not a religious occasion. It is an African-American festival held annually from the 26th of December to January 1st to celebrate life and the harvest. The festival was first celebrated in 1966 in the United States.

Dr. Maulana Karenga introduced this celebration as an alternative to the commercialism of Christmas. Although gifts are exchanged, the focus is on culture, family and community. Those celebrating Kwanzaa often decorate their homes in black, green and red. The black represents the color of the people, red stands for the common blood that all people of African descent share and green is used to evoke the land of Africa.
