To remove acrylic nails at home trim the nails, file the surface, and soak the acrylic in acetone to break it down. Care for natural nails by moisturizing them daily.
- Trim the acrylic
Trim the acrylic nails to remove as much of the artificial nails as possible. Begin breaking the acrylic down by filing the surface of each nail. This makes it easier for the acetone to penetrate the surface.
- Soak nails in acetone
Soak one cotton pad or cotton ball for each finger in acetone. Place the soaked cotton on the nail, and wrap the exterior with foil to keep it in place. Allow the acetone to soften the acrylic for 30 minutes or longer.
- Wipe each nail, and repeat the process
After 30 minutes, remove the foils, and wipe each nail with a paper towel. Then, soak cotton in acetone again, and repeat the process, allowing the acetone to work for another 30 to 60 minutes.
- Wash and moisturize hands
Remove the foils, and wipe each nail. If any acrylic residue remains, file it away before washing hands with a nonabrasive soap. Massage almond or olive oil into each nail.
- Care for natural nails after removal
Moisturize hands and nails daily to help encourage healthy growth of natural nails. Optionally, use a hand and nail treatment pack, available at most drug stores.
