To remove a bad smell from the refrigerator, throw out expired items, remove items from the refrigerator, and take out and clean the shelves with hot water and soap. Sanitize the shelves, floor and ceiling with a mixture of chlorine bleach and water.
Before sanitizing the refrigerator, identify the source of the odor by sniffing each item. Clean the walls, door interior and gasket with hot water and soap and sanitize with 1 tablespoon of chlorine bleach mixed into a gallon of water. Dry the refrigerator with a towel and restock fresh items. If the odor persists, leave the door open or put silica gel, coffee grounds or baking soda on a plate and place it on a shelf in the refrigerator.
