To remove urine smell from carpet, locate the urine spill, absorbing as much of the urine as possible with a towel, and use a pet urine removal product. Rinse the product from the carpet with water, and weigh down a stack of paper towels to absorb any remaining liquid.
- Locate the urine spill
If possible, begin working to remove odor as soon as the pet soils the carpet with urine. For dried urine, shine a blacklight on the carpet. Urine stains glow under ultraviolet light. Use masking tape to mark a box around the stain.
- Absorb the urine
For stains that are still wet, absorb as much of the urine as possible. Place a folded clean towel on the area, and stand on the towel to absorb the liquid. Repeat with a fresh towel until the urine stops transferring to towels.
- Use a pet urine removal product
Purchase these products at a pet supply store. Spray the stain with the product, and allow it to stand for 5 minutes. Beginning at the outside of the area, absorb the product from the carpet in a circular motion working toward the center.
- Rinse with water
Spray the area with tap water, and blot again to remove any remaining product.
- Dry the carpet
Form a thick pad of paper towels, and place it over the wet area. Place a heavy object on top of the paper towels, and leave the stack overnight. Remove the heavy object and paper towels. Vacuum the carpet.
