The Golden Temple, also known as Sri Darbar Sahib, is named after Hari, the temple of god and was constructed by Guru Arjan Sahib, the fifth Nanak. Guru Arjan himself was responsible for designing the architecture of the Golden Temple.

The land needed for the construction of the Golden Temple was acquired by Guru Arjan Sahib from Zamindars or lords of local villages. The actual construction work began in 1570 and ended in 1577. Guru Arjan Sahib received assistance with the construction work by important Sikh's like Bah Sahlo ji, Baba Budha ji and Bhai Gurdas ji.
