What does Reverend Parris in "The Crucible" want?

In "The Crucible," Reverend Paris wants to protect his position as Salem's minister. Many people in Salem have turned against him, so it is his mission to ensure they do not replace him.

Throughout the play, Reverend Paris is at odds with all of the other characters, except Mr. and Mrs. Putnam, who have many of the same enemies he does. When accusations of witchcraft arise, he attempts to hide his involvement with the scandal and closely align himself with the court in order to prove that he stands with God's laws, thereby gaining back some respect. He hoped that the trials would revive the fear of God in Salem, thus increasing church attendance and quieting his enemies.
