Why has Reverend Parris sent for Reverend Hale as "The Crucible" opens?

During the opening to Arthur Miller's play, "The Crucible," it is made clear that Reverend Parris has sent for Reverend Hale in order to ascertain whether his daughter has fallen victim to witchcraft. Reverend John Hale, the minister of Beverly, is an expert on witchcraft.

Reverend Parris suspects that his 10-year old daughter, Betty, has been cursed because she is catatonic in bed. This followed a midnight forest dance with his African slave, Tituba.

While Hale is initially in favor of the witch trials in Salem, as well as instrumental in supporting them, he later learns that Abigail has been lying. As a result, he seeks to bring an end to the trials.
