What is a reverse ileostomy?

A reverse ileostomy is done to reconnect the small intestine to the other intestine, according to Scott & White Healthcare. Ileostomies are done to ensure the body has a way to rid itself of waste.

After the colon has been removed or the bowels have been bypassed due to cancer or another condition, an ileostomy takes place to create an opening in the abdomen. The small intestine is used to make a stoma, or opening on the abdomen, to filter out digestive waste. This material is then captured in a baglike contraption. Occasionally, an ilestomy is temporary, and a reversal can be done so that the person can filter out waste normally again, which is a reverse ileostomy.
