Rhinoceros beetles are herbivorous and consume fruit, nectar and sap. The larvae consume the decaying matter of plants. They are sometimes called Hercules beetles because they can lift 850 times their own weight.
Rhinoceros beetles have a horn-like structure on their heads that they use to burrow into soil. They do not use their horns as protection against predators. They are able to produce hissing sounds by rubbing their wings against their abdomens.
Rhinoceros beetles live on every continent except Antarctica. In some countries, children collect them as pets. They do not pose a danger to humans. They have a lifespan of 1 to 2 years, but most of this time is spent as larvae.
