Do rhinos put out fires?
By Forinfos - 18/05/2025 - 0 comments
According to Discovery Channel, rhinos are not capable of putting out fires. While they are known to stomp their feet when nervous or upset, fires trigger a sense of panic in the animal, eliciting a "flight" response.
The myth about rhinos putting out fires may be related to the animal's highly-evolved sense of smell; the scent of ashes and smoke would irritate the rhino's olfactory sensory neurons and send it into a stomping fit of rage. Additionally, brush fires that rhinos encounter in the wilds of Africa spread rapidly and encompass large areas too big for the animals to put out.
