The romantic hero in the King Arthur legend is Lancelot, according to the Camelot Project. Some versions of the legend claim that King Arthur's wife Guinevere had a lengthy affair with Lancelot, her true love.
Lancelot serves as a hero to Guinevere more than once, protecting her when Arthur falls for an impostor and again later, when she is scheduled to be burned at the stake. The legend states that Guinevere eventually left both Arthur and Lancelot, retiring to a nunnery until her death. Some writers portray Lancelot and Guinevere as star-crossed lovers, while others focus on the consequences of their infidelity.
