Rome is situated on the eastern banks of the Tiber River in the province of Roma in Italy. It lies to the west of the Apennine Mountains, and its geographical coordinates are 41° 54' N and 12° 29' E.
According to How Stuff Works, ancient Rome's location on the Tiber River, approximately 17 miles from where the river empties into the Tyrrhenian Sea, allowed it to participate in maritime trade. The city's central location allowed it to conquer the Italian peninsula easily and go on to extend its empire throughout the Mediterranean, encompassing Europe as well as parts of Asia and Africa.
