The main ingredient of root beer is sassafras, which is taken from the root or bark of the sassafras tree. Additional flavors such as vanilla or ginger are added to the drink before it is carbonated.
The first bottled root beer available for purchase by the public was produced in 1893. This root beer was formulated by a pharmacist named Charles Hires.
The most popular root beer sold worldwide today is the A & W brand. One of the main reasons for its popularity is that root beer does not contain caffeine. This makes it one of a few stimulant free soda drinks suitable for younger children.
