In the 1520s, King Francis I of France sent Verrazzano to the East Coast of North America in search of a route to the Pacific. On his first expedition he made landfall near Cape Fear, North Carolina, then ultimately traveled north, where he discovered New York Harbor.
Verrazzano made three total voyages to the Americas. On the third voyage, in 1528, he was killed and eaten by natives in 1528. The flagship of his first voyage was named Delfina. It made landfall after 50 days at sea and first traveled south to the northern tip of Florida, then moved north to New York, and finally to what is present day Newport, Rhode Island. He then headed back to France.
