The Iditarod race begins in Anchorage and ends in Nome. There are two routes for the Iditarod. The Northern Route is used in even years; the Southern Route is used during odd years.
The Iditarod race is an almost 1,000 mile trek across the Alaskan wilderness, stretching from Anchorage to Nome. The Northern Route is 975 miles, while the Southern Route is 998 miles. The Southern Route was added after the board of directors saw the impact the race had on small villages each year. The Southern Route is also the route that passes through Iditarod, the ghost town for which the race was named.
