A rowing team is called a "crew." The term "crew," as used in the American academic circle, may also refer to the actual sport of rowing.

Rowing can be classified according to the number of oars used. In sweep rowing, the participants only use one oar called a sweep oar. Sculling, meanwhile, is a type of rowing where a crew uses two oars. Sweep rowing hosts competitions for pairs, fours or eights, while sculling has rowing events for singles, doubles or quads. The distance set for secondary schools is often at 1,500 meters while master crews race at 1,000 meters. The standard length for Olympic races is at 2,000 meters.
