According to its official website, the Royal Mint is a government-owned company responsible for minting all coins in the UK, as well as medals and blanks. The mint was founded in 1968 when the country began using metal coins and is headquartered in Llantrisant, South Wales.
In addition to producing coins for the UK, the Royal Mint also creates coins and medals for an average of 60 countries worldwide. It exports more coins than any other mint in the world. The mint employs over 900 people and can produce 90 million coins and blanks in a week for a total of almost five billion coins annually.
