What is rubber baseboard trim used for?

Rubber baseboard trim is used to protect lower walls from scuffs and dings. It is often used in commercial settings, where heavy traffic increases the likelihood of damage to walls. The baseboard covers an area extending from the floor to a few inches up the wall.
Rubber baseboards may also serve a decorative purpose, covering the joint between the wall surface and the floor. They can be molded around corners and other obstructions and are installed quickly and easily with adhesive. Most rubber baseboards contain an extended, curved area at the base that resembles the quarter-round molding used with more traditional wooden baseboards.
