What are the rules for filing alphabetically?

When filing alphabetically, each part of the name, or unit should be considered separate from the other units in the name. The filer must go through each unit letter by letter before moving on to the next unit. For example, "Market Resources" comes before "Marketing Plan" when filing.

If several names have the same first unit, the second unit can help determine how to file them. For example, when filing by name, "Smith, Jane" comes before "Smith, John." Punctuation in units should generally be disregarded when filing alphabetically. For example, "O'Henry" should be treated as "Ohenry" for the purpose of filing.
