What is Russia called now?

Russia's official name is the Russian Federation. The country took this name after the breakdown of the Soviet Union in 1999. The Russian Federation is often referred to simply as Russia.

Russia is the largest country, covering 17,075,400 square kilometers of land across Europe and Asia. From 1922 to 1991, Russia was known as the Soviet Union, a socialist state governed solely by the Communist Party. Through the duration of its existence, several other countries were involved in this union via various treaties, including Belarus, Ukraine, Latvia, Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan. This union collapsed in 1991 after years of conflict.
