What is a sagittal plane?

A sagittal plane is an imaginary division used in anatomy to divide the body into left and right sides. The sagittal plane runs vertically through the body from front to back. The sagittal plane does not necessarily divide the body into equal parts.
There are several types of sagittal planes. The midsagittal plane divides the body into equal left and right halves, while the parasagittal plane divides the body into unequal left and right halves.
The sagittal plane can be used on any body part. For example, a finger could be split with a sagittal plane to evaluate the internal components.
