The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics shows the average salary for biochemists and biophysicists was $91,640 as of May 2013. The BLS often lumps closely related jobs in its data. At the top end, 10 percent made at or above $147,780 annually. Another 10 percent made at or below $42,660.
The largest employment sector, science research and development, had a slightly higher average at $93,280, according to the BLS. Biochemists in pharmaceutical manufacturing averaged $88,140 per year. New Jersey had the highest average incomes for biochemists and biophysicists at $125,090. Massachusetts was next at $104,540. Connecticut was the third-highest at $103,720.
