According to WebMD, topical salicylic acid is not safe for use during pregnancy. However, Drugs.com says that the safety of topical salicylic acid use during pregnancy and breastfeeding is actually unknown.
According to Drugs.com, topical salicylic acid causes shedding of the outer layer of skin. It is used to treat acne, corns and warts. It is available in many different forms, including creams, soaps, ointments and patches. WebMD notes that many women develop acne in response to the hormones of pregnancy. Products containing alpha hydroxy acids or glycolic acid are safe for use during pregnancy. Topical erythromycin cream and azelaic acid are also safe, although they require a prescription.
