Lavaca is the oldest existing neighborhood in San Antonio. It has roots dating to the 18th century, although development of the area did not truly begin until the mid-19th century.
The Lavaca area was divided up in the mid-19th century, though it was not until about the 1870s that it began to be built up. The area was primarily occupied by working-class families. Before it was built up, it was mainly farmland. Today, many different types of people live there, from artists to entrepreneurs. One of its appeals is its close proximity to the downtown area, allowing for easy access to the area's many attractions.
