What is a Sargent cherry?

A Sargent cherry (Prunus sargentii) is a large, hardy ornamental cherry tree that produces deep pink spring flowers in spring and small purple or black fruit in the summer months. The fruit is especially loved by birds.

Sargent cherry trees have reddish-brown bark and shiny, dark-green leaves that turn red in the fall. They may grow to a height of 40 to 50 feet with an equal spread. Sargent cherries grow best in an area with full sun and well-drained soil. They transplant well and are often used as shade trees or street trees. The trees may live as long as 50 years, somewhat longer than other cherry tree varieties.
