As of 2014, although most scanners come with scanning software, Windows Fax and Scan allows you to scan a picture without the software. Set the resolution and the file type, and then click Scan. You need a scanner and Windows 7 or later.
- Place the photo on the flatbed
Place the photo on the glass flatbed of the scanner, and ensure the photo is squared against the corner.
- Open Windows Fax and Scan
Click the Start button, and locate Windows Fax and Scan in the All Programs list. Click the program to open it.
- Open a new scan
Click the Scan button in the lower left-hand corner of the start screen of Windows Fax and Scan. Select New Scan.
- Select the scanner
If your scanner is not appearing at the top of the New Scan screen, click the Change button and select the scanner.
- Configure the basic settings
Select Photo in the Profile drop-down menu. Select your scanner type as the source.
- Configure the quality settings
Use Color or Grayscale as the color format. Set the file type to TIF or PNG, and set the resolution to 300 DPI.
- Scan the image
Scan the photo, and save it as a TIF or PNG image.
