What is the M phase known as?

The M phase in the cell cycle is known as the mitotic phase and is comprised of mitosis and cytokinesis. The outcome of the M phase is two distinct but identical daughter cells with the same genetic material.

Mitosis, a form of cell division, is divided into four stages: prophase, metaphase, anaphase and telophase. These stages represent the cell's chromosomes differentiating from one another and dividing into two separate nuclei. Cytokinesis is when the cytoplasm of the cell divides, and it occurs during telophase and after the division of the nucleus. Interphase, which is when the cell grows and copies its genetic material, precedes mitosis.
