What is the Star Registry?

The International Star Registry is a private company that "sells" the right to name stars to the general public. The International Astronomical Union, the scientific society that names stars and maintains catalogs, insists that such designations have no official standing and are not kept in their records.

The International Star Registry is just one of many companies that sell star names, and the names assigned to "its" stars are kept on file only in the company's own database. As the IAU explains, the scientific community does not consider the night sky to be for sale, and it is not involved with this practice in any way.
