The snowshoe hare is scientifically classified as a member of the kingdom Animalia, phylum Chordata, Mammalia class, Lagomorpha order, Leporidae family and Lepus genus. The scientific name for the snowshoe hare is the Lepus americanus.
The snowshoe hare is the smallest of the animals within its genus and is actually sized more like a rabbit. It is distinguished by its large back feet, which help it travel more easily in snowy conditions. It is white during the winter, but its fur turns brown in the summer months. The snowshoe hare thrives in the wild and is not at risk of extinction.
