There is currently no reliable scientific information that supports black cohosh use for labor induction, according to WebMD. Of all nonpharmacologic methods used to ripen the cervix and induce labor, only mechanical and surgical methods are proven effective, explains American Family Physician.
A pregnant woman should use black cohosh combined with blue cohosh very cautiously, as multiorgan damage to the infant during childbirth can occur, explains Mayo Clinic. Although blue cohosh is not known to have any negative effects on the heart or blood vessels, one report shows severe injury to an infant during childbirth, resulting in permanent brain damage.
