The scientific name for corn is zea mays. Corn is in the Poaceae family and this family contains more than 100 subspecies of corn.
Corn is a grain that comes in white, black, blue and red varieties, among others. It is produced all over the world in countries such as the United States, Romania and South Africa.
Corn has been domesticated since 9000 BC and was a staple in the diets of Native American tribes as well as the Mayan and Olmec civilizations.
Although not as popular today, Americans still consume around 160 pounds of corn and corn products each year. Unfortunately, most of the corn consumed by Americans is in the form of high fructose corn syrup.
