What is the scientific name for the grizzly bear?

The scientific name for the grizzly bear is Ursus arctos horribilis. The grizzly was classified and named in 1815 and is inclusive of any North American subspecies of the brown bear.

Grizzly bears are solitary animals that can be found in a variety of habitats in Asia, Europe and North America. There are approximately 1,500 grizzlies in the United States with the majority living in Montana and Wyoming.

The omnivores can gain more than three pounds a day during hyperphagia, a period that lasts two to four months while the bears prepare for hibernation. The grizzly hibernates for five to seven months out of the year.
