The scientific name for the white-tailed deer is Odocoileus virginianus. The white-tailed deer is found primarily in forest lands throughout North America, Mexico, parts of Central America and southern Canada.
While a small number of female white-tailed deer have antlers, males are known by their antlers and grow them each year. The points on the antlers of a white-tailed deer are an indicator of age, but they are not definitive age markers. Deer are opportunistic eaters that consume a variety of plants, leaves, legumes, grasses, fruit, corn, acorns and other foods in their various habitats. Deer also feed on birds and field mice.
