The scientific name of the yellow perch fish is "Perca flavescens," which is the name of the species of fish to which it belongs. The yellow perch is a member of the perch family which includes sauger, walleye and numerous small darters.
Perca flavescens are also commonly referred to as striped perch, raccoon perch and ringed perch. The fish are usually olive green in color on top with eight vertical dusky bars on the side and silvery underside. The pelvic, or chest, fins are usually orange or red in color. The fish live in streams, lakes and ponds throughout North America and require water that is rich in vegetation.
